Current limiting is quite common in power supplies for laboratory
applications. For example, if you had a temperature-controlled experiment
using a heater and a thermometer in a feedback loop, you might want to limit
the maximum power the heater could get. So you might use fixed, regulated
voltage and variable but limited current so that voltage x current limit =
maximum heater power. You could just as well use fixed current and variable
but limited voltage. Not all that useful for sdiy applications. (Current
limiting is built into most IC regulators.)
