I used to have a data sheet on a IC used for telephone answering machines
that recorded the VERY small charges that analog will record on digital
EEPROM chips. Apparently with enough gain, one can playback this signal and
it is analog. Search the archives cause I know it was talked about on this
or the Analogue Heaven list. The units were not realtime but one could
exploit the tech and make a large analog BBD like device with it.
