The style of music you create isn't incredibly important when it comes to
analog synths... obviously some designs will work a little better than
others for DnB. Here's what I'd personally build for a first modular: A 2
or 3 VCO monosynth. 3 oscillators is plenty "thick"... a little overdrive
in the filters and some ringmod will provide "grit".
Recipe:
2 or 3 VCOs (w/ hard and soft sync)
2 LFOs
1 noise source & S/H
2 filters (one LP moog ladder, one SVF)
2 VCAs (with cross fade)
2 Mixers (one before each filter)
1 Ring modulator
3 or 4 Envelope generators (2 ADSR, 1 or 2 AR)
1 Portamento/Glide module
1 MIDI-CV converter
Of course, this comes real close to the ASM-1... so that may be a good
place to start. You can customize and modify the design to suit your
needs, as well as add other external modules.
Check www.buchi.de for the archives, and search for ASM-1... you should
find several weeks worth of reading material :)
