For a internal drive, get a IDE adaptor.
You can boot from IDE with tos 2.06
But it also works with older TOS if you load the HD driver from floppy
first.
After loading the driver the rest can be booted from the IDE drive.
I do this all the time, but have to check how I got this to work, sorry
don't remember at the moment.
Any way getting TOS 2.06 is preferred.

If you prefer a external drive, best get a AHDI => SCSI adaptor cable and
use a SCSI drive.

SCSI tools junior/light is a good working driver for both IDE and SCSI /
AHDI drives.
