[sdiy] PC-based synth advice

Hi!
I once had this kind of concept on my mind:
Pentium motherboard, 64NB, PCMCIA HD, soundblaster live, controls and
small lcd. I had in my mind that, I'd been using live's emu10k1 dsp as
analog modelling synth. Operating system would be linux, and controls
would send midi messages and parameters, and few buttons for other
functions. Unfortunately, Creative doesn't give detailed specs about
emu10k1, and my project is in ice right now...=(
I have few old 512MB PCMCIA HD's, so OS could be installed there. And I
thinked to use it as sampler / tracker too. All programs running under
linux. Only wishing, that I could have specs for emu...=/
