    This has confused me for a long time (still does).  If the filter is going
to add distortion, there should be some way of controlling it.  I considered
using a pair of multipliers to generate ax**3 + bx**2 where a and b are
adjustable paramters and put it in the loop of a very linear filter so that I
could control the distortion...but, have never gotten around to it...
