If you are hung on wood for the appearance, I would use steel behind instead
of aluminum so you can go thinner (probably stainless).  If you wanted the
pots nuts and everything in front of the wood, you could actually use veneer
instead.  With veneer you are likely to find some very intentional good
grains.

Sounds strange to me.  But, that's what so great about DIY -- to each his
own. :)

Of course, the boys in the machine shop at work
will gladly do all sorts of strange and wonderful
things to metal for me; I just like the look of wood,
and it would be fairly easy to do nice graphics on too.
