I imagine it's just an IR LED and sensor system... the LED sends out the
light, and the sensor measures the reflected light as it bounces off your
hand.. the closer your hand it, the more light is reflected. This probably
wouldn't be too hard to incorporate into a diy synth for a CV source or
something.
