I work on 2 different mixers (one at home and one at the studio I work
at)... they are both Soundcrafts, and the inserts are wired opposite. One
has Tip=send, the other has Tip=return... so I guess there are no
standards, even from a single company.
I commonly use mono cables in insert points, and there's 2 schools of
thought: Think of plugging a mono cable into the jack... in your
circumstance, would you rather have the mono cable act as a dirct output,
or as an input that "ignores" (shorts) the send? I personally like the
direct output option better, so I like Tip=send.
Of course, when you use ring=send, you can "half plug" the mono cable and
get a direct output as well... but these tend to pop out of the jack at the
most inopportune moments (like in the middle of a final mixdown)
As for the insert cables, I generally buy ProCo... they're resonably priced
and quite robust. I usually get them from Sweetwater or my local music store
