Mylar is a plastic. It is used as the dialectric. Mylar capacitors are of
medium to high quality. They are good for non critical timing circuits, audio
coupling, etc.
At one time, even radio shack carried mylar capacitors (I don't get there
very often, so I don't know if they still do).
