Well, certainly any EG that is fast enough and has the
ability to retrigger itself could create a waveform
that could be heard. In that case, you would probably
want it to output a bipolar signal. However, that is
probably not the normal use for envelopes. I think I
would probably be annoyed if I had to determine where
my EGs basepoint is everytime I went to use it to
control the output VCA for a voice. It seems to me
that this is a good candidate for an outboard offset
amp.
I am getting the impression that taking the time to
calibrate the output leves of modules is highly
valuable. If I know that the output of my ADSR goes
from 0 to 10v I can always scale it back with a pot,
but, by having a calibrated output I can feed it into
an offset amp that is calibrated to output -5 to 5 and
not have to worry about a whole bunch of front panel
setting to get my scale/offset correct.
Thoughts?
