Better stay with the original formant.
The "Formant Pro" book is full of errors and examples how _not_ to build a
synth.

As for the obsolete formant dual trannies.
In one of the later (think its was the 24dB VCF) articles its stated the
dual trannies for the expos could be hard to get, but where not critical and
you could use other types too.
