Agreed, this, imho, is one of the key characteristics of the 909 sound. I
have a nm 909 kick simulator which ties sync to the gate pulse and it really
makes a difference for consistency. You also need several fast and subtle
modulations. The 909 circuit has a few good ideas and it's a good place to
start.
