I've been asking myself the same questions lately. I'd like to
hear the answers you get.
Regarding panel size, seems most of them are either 3U (Analogue
Systems, Analogue Solutions, Doepfer) or 5U (Moog, Arrick, MOTM).
I'm not sure about the DIY and homebrew ones.
People with big fingers tend to prefer 5U, people with small
houses tend to prefer 3U :-) (they're more compact). One advantage
of the 3U format is that it's a standard in the industry (at least
in Europe) and therefore racks are easy to find and relatively
inexpensive.
Careful about CV ; some may not be 1V/oct !
There doesn't seem to be any consensus on power supplies. Some are
+/-12 V, some are +/-15 V, and there's an even wider chaos^H^H^H^H
^Hchoice of connectors.
