While the whole matter of ergonomics and panel layout is a matter of personal
preference, I can share an interesting aspect I've found with the Blacet-type
layout. With the knobs lined up and fairly close together, you can easily
play several knobs at the same time with one hand. For example, using my
right hand, I put my thumb on the left side of a knob, and my other fingers
on the right side of other knobs. With practice, you can smoothly fade things
in and out while varying LFO rate or filter frequency or controlling
regeneration or whatever and still have your other hand to work with. If you
focus on moving your whole hand up and down, the knob under your thumb goes
in the opposite direction of the knobs under your fingers. If you rotate your
hand, the knobs all go in the same direction. Where you place your fingers in
the first place (near a fingertip or near a knuckle to start) helps control
the extent of knob rotation.
