I just checked the MMA Spec for this, because lack of status bytes caused me
hassles in the past.  In a quick perusal, I can find nothing about the
timing for having to insert the next status byte.

Common sense says that you should insert them on the outbound stream every
so often.  The timeout for active sensing is 300 mS, so if you're timing
them,  that might make a reasonable interval for status retransmission also.
