The searchengine crossreferences equivalents and similar types. 
(Often there are variations only in pinout, socket and heater voltages.)

AFAIK tube testers merely measure the cathode emission, by measuring 
plate or cathode current. Suitable voltage sources provided, one can hook
up a 
test setup to do the same.
