A good reference book for tube outlines and characteristics is the RCA
Receiving Tube Manual.  I have one of these I have used since the mid
70s.Absolutely essential in my opinion.

Hi,
    Found a stash of tubes in this old garage. Where can I find out more
about these? I've always only worked with solid state. I have a few
schematics with tubes in them, but how can I find out about there
interchangeability for tube #'s? Someone told me something about a tube
tester. Where can I find out more about these?
