That's true.  Communications that are flaky based on hardware problems
usually get pretty severely sick fairly quickly...or are intermittent enough
that they take a long time to track down.  However, making it an option
would mean that you could disable running status when things acted funny, to
see if it makes any difference.  It would remove one variable when debugging.
