[sdiy] plexiglass panels for modular?

One advantage of using plex/lexan is that it is often used for custom
cosmetic displays. This results in most towns having a plastic's house
willing to mill&drill some very cool front panels. I have had keyboard
panels, VU meter bridges, and Mixing Surfaces, and rack doors done
inexpensively and with good looking results. (South Bay Plastic Torrance,CA)
Ledgending/Lettering Plex/Lex has alot to recommend it as well.

Think twice however before doing it yourself you need special tools that
keep heat away from the plex. At one firm i worked at some poor fellow cut
off two fingers when the Lexan Sheet melted underneath a "stalled" table
saw.

regards,
p

I think flexability would be an issue. It would have
to be pretty thick or else it would flex alot.

Also, plexi is kinda hard to machine. It likes to
crack, and requires special drills. If you are bent on
using plastic, go with Lexan, also known as
polycarbonate. It machines really easy and is tougher
than plexi. Its also more expensive.

Note: DO NOT USE LOCTITE THREADLOCKER ANYWHERE NEAR
PLEXIGLASS!!! I did, and a small amount destroyed
about a foot of plexiglass on a test fixutre. Made it
look like some hit it with a hammer.
