Paul,
> a) lack of the great "gee whiz!" factor in people under 30yrs old. I think
many of the DIYers

was 8 months of saving

large DIY community.
hey!!!!
I went to school in the 80's dude!
I grew up with the DX7 and D50, hated both for their complete lack of soul.
> b) affluent parents.
yeah right, I wish.....
Though people as a rule have more disposable income now than they did 20
years ago.
Though for me a lot of comes down to (c)
> c) lack of patience. Stuff doesn't work, and you are actually better off
to fix it.
true, but the other thing;-
'Why should I make it for $100 when I can buy it for $120?'
people are inherently lazy, if they can find an easy way to do what they
want, they will... kinda like water (shortest path, etc)
Also electronics are getting smaller and faster....
How many people here can successully solder a 208pin QFP?
now how many can solder a 40pin DIL?
Also everything is getting more flexible, FPGAs, Micro-controllers, this
means adding not only to the electronics skill set, but also codeing..
Technology changes these days at an absurd rate, this weeks greatest thing,
will be obsolete in a month..
You just get your head round how to use something and then it becomes a joke
to do so...
also people dont seem as willing to 'differ from the norm' so why should
they want modulars, new and different synths? when they can buy 'that crazy
dance sound' from a Yamalond SR9697 groove box for $299.....
Apathy is a BIG player in the decline of DIY,
Apathy for a different sound,
apathy for building it,
Apathy for the learning curve.
Its a great shame,
Though one *BIG* plus point now, the internet...
whilst the decline is happening the world is becoming a smaller place, so
meeting like minded people is a LOT easier than it used to be!
So I say, let the people who cant be arsed sit on the couches and get brain
dead watching the one-eyed monster in the corner.. I love DIY, even on those
days when I could throw stuff out the window, its part of what makes me, me!
Synth DIY will never DIY
(DIE, geddit?, ok, it was a bad pun)
sorry, Ive ranted too much....
Paul
