More turns = higher inductance. You use wire big enough to handle the
expected currents

Small core is best... less iron saturates faster. Use a Toroid core for best
result... you might try a pot core or E-I core which would allow you to use a
bobbin
to wind on (easier). Avoid a bar core... they do not like to saturate.

Any gap in the core will make the saturation point much higher....
