This is a great little VCO by René Schmitz.  He has a nice page
with "how it works" info, the layout and schematic.  I built and
regularly use a linear version of this.  The VCO's simplicity is
deceptive; it has a suprisingly large accurate range.  My
stripboard version runs 9 octaves.

It gives you sawtooth and pulse width modulated outputs (the PWM
can be set to give square).  It uses 1 IC (cheap) and 3
transistors.  Lots of functionality for peanuts.
