Greetings all,

This is my last try on this list to get info about the Buchla 700's
video chip. My mistake in the former posts was that I did not provide
the full part number, for reasons that are obsolete by now, so here
is all the info I have and I hope someone can answer the questions or
point me to further help.

The chip is called 82716. Sometimes referred to as VSDD (video
storage and display device). Developed by Intel Corp, manufactured
1986 to 1992 by Intel and second source Matra Design Semiconductor
(or Matra Harris or MHS, now a division of Temic).

What I need to know:
1) Exact meaning of part number of five of the chip's versions
2) Machines besides the Buchla 700 that used this chip

Or at least a way how I will be more likely to find out about these
two items!

(No help from Intel by the way, "chip too old")

Regarding item 2), the Intel product timeline mentions the chip, but
not any machines that used it. According to Don Buchla it was a
decidedly non-standard device; a pre-Windows graphics experiment that
failed. However the chip was manufactured for eight years, so
apparently someone did buy and use it, which is what I want to know.

Regarding item 1), I have two data sheets for the chip; one is freely
available from the Partminer section "Integrated Circuit -
Peripherals - Datasheet Reference Content", the other one was kindly
sent by Peter Blackett (thanks again). You can view them at this URL
(no account or subscription required):

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buchla_700/files

The Partminer section "Integrated Circuit - Analog - Video Support
Circuits - Storage and Display Circuit" contains datasheets on the
82716 too, but I don't know them because one needs a pay account to
view them. (Thus my query a few days ago.)

The two data sheets I have date from the development period (1987),
but I'm looking for later ones to find out about bugfixes in later
versions.

Here's a list of all available chip versions I've sighted so far,
along with part number explanations where I know them, and question
marks where I have yet to find out...

-------------------------------------

As I said before, I know this is somewhat off topic and I don't
expect you synth wizards to know much about odd graphics devices. But
many of you certainly can tell me ways to get at this kind of info,
or recommend other places to ask for it.

Hey, it's a Buchla and as such was a DIY project back then! ;-)

Thanks for any help!

Regards,

Sebastian Kuehnl
