I also make panels this way and indeed, paper peeling from
edges is a problem. It's not exactly peeling, it is rather
ripped to fibers. If the module isn't moved around too much
it's not a problem at all. But removing it and placing again
in the rack caused few of my modules lose bits of paper
at the edges. Maybe wrapping the paper behind the front plate
would help.
I also use acrylic spray. About 4 layers from 50cm. It gives
satin (more matt rather than satin) finish.
I print panels with inkjet on 250gsm or thicker coloured
paper. Paint it with the spray (both sides to impregnate it
better) and stick to front plate using glue-spray from art shop.
