I recommend synC to any DIY-er who wants to get a better understanding
of modular synths. It's great to be able to plug a bunch of random
(well hopefully not *too* random) components together and see what
happens. The included tutorial gets you started in understanding
how to hook things together. You can download a hundred or so ensembles
(sme), plus various modules. download "synthDream" and prepare to hear
amazing sounds! You can control the synth through MIDI, or from your
PC keyboard. Even if you don't register, you won't miss much!

Although development of synC has been discontinued, as Dr. Sync
has moved on to work with Native Instruments, synC is still
available for sale, and bugs fixes still happen. There is a
good user group that resides on yahoo's groups.
I love this program because it helps nail things down for me. I'm
reading a book called "Sound synthesis and sampling". It's all fine
and good to look at the spectrum diagrams and pictures of waves
that a particular synthesis method produces, but it's altogether
something else to plug a synth together, hit a key, tweak a knob,
and hear the sound while watching the realtime oscilloscope!
