At the risk of publicly displaying my ignorance, I believe Chamberlin is 
referring to his discussion of FFT windowing functions in Ch. 16. It's 
confusing because the graphs don't actually show the window functions, but 
show their effect on the FFT "equivalent bandpass filter."

Don't take my opinion for the final word, though. I make no claims to be a 
signal processing wiz. But after reading Chamberlin I felt like I understood 
how the FFT works; before that, it was just shuffling numbers in weird 
patterns.
