They don't suck, they're just best used for different things. Too many 
sounds that use LPFs can easily turn the low end of a synth track to mush. 
If you HPF some sounds you suddenly find you get a lot more space and 
clarity. Likewise with BPFs. It's a *very* useful tool for string sounds, 
for cutting up drum loops so you just get the top end, for cleaning up 
low-end anything.

You can also get some nice phasing effects if you sweep both HPF with LPF 
responses together.

Generally a HPF is more useful for slightly more specialised filtering 
applications, and not that whangy/vocal-ish sound that LPFs do so well. An 
HPF has a ton of uses while mixing and tracking. It's just not the best 
tool for making classic synth-type sounds.
