DIYer's I was going through my boxes of old computer crap the other day
and found something I had forgotten I still owned. It's an ancient IBM
sound card. My recollection is that on board it has the equivalent of 8
Yamaha FM synths, or something like this. Not a DX7, but the equiv some
cheaper FM synth they made around the time the DX7 was king. This is long
before the era of the soundblaster as I remember; it's pure Yamaha
oddness.
It has a MIDI dongle with it. I will include that as well.
It's free to a good home (I have no use for it anymore, but, read the
caveats below)
a) It used to work, but I obviously haven't plugged it in years. I know I
removed it from service when I got rid of an original 4.77Mhz IBM PC, it
wasn't shelved because it didn't work, but rather because I didn't have a
machine to put it in anymore. So it probably will work, but who knows. At
the very least you may be able to clip some parts off of it.
b) It's an 8 bit ISA card board (if I know this group, that probably won't
stop many of you!!!)
c) The software for it (5.25" DOS 4.0 era I think) is long gone. You used
the software to "config" and "program" the sounds on it. I have no
idea where the software can still be had, if it can be had, or have any
specs or ideas about how to write your own. Maybe IBM or Yamaha has some
info (???)
d) It's noisy as I recall. The S/N is awful, making it not the best for
serious recording, assuming you can get it to make any S at all.
e) I will ship in anywhere in the US, ground, on my dime. To give back to
the group (well, as I see it anyway). Anyone in Europe is welcome to it
but will have to email me about covering the costs of shipping and
dealing with import tax, luxury tax, duties tax, or whatever tax
you guys have over there in Europe.
f) first come first served. Send me your ship to address offline (or in
the group if you want, makes no difference to me) and I will ship it out.
If I don't hear anything in a week or so, I'll pitch it. End of an era.
