Something finally clicked in my head about this filter bank of yours:
there's one in the Eventide boxes, from the H3000 on up. I think they call
it a "resonant string modeller," and the description of it that I remember
was something like being able to listen to the output of a vocoder's
analysis bank, or playing sound into a piano with the dampers opened. You
can tune the the whole array of filters from the control knob.
A friend used that program on some water drum tracks he recorded...they're
metal bowls that you put some water in, and then tip them to get different
notes when you tap the side. He turned the tuning knob in time to his
breathing, and the results were particularly cool.
All of a sudden I'm wondering if it would be possible to make a Shepard
function to drive several of these filterbanks at once.
