the pseudolocal surplus pile, quinn's in san leandro (bay area), had
14-watt amps based on TCA2030 for $4ish apiece. they were made for an
educational-style record player, and luckily enough, google unearthed the
schematic &c. - so it provides an example, if you can ignore the motor
drive, mic input stage, phono stage, etc...:

i have some class D monolithic IC amps from texas instruments that seem
promising... anybody messed with these? they go up to 10 watts/30 peak and
tout great efficiency, but are somewhat more complex at 40 pins. maybe you
can ignore it all; i'll find out soon.
lots of info on ti.com - class D are switching devices and allegedly very
efficient.
