Actually, I think this IS the simplest and best thing. I would vote for
SMD resistors, 0805 or 0603 size. I know you've etched PCBs before...
You could cut a cable and insert normal resistors. In the end that will
be a hairpulling experience and I doubt the mechanical stability of that.
In the end it would be just wasted time. I guess that there are some
here that would do it, but I would not.
