speaking of which, does anybody know exactly how the dulay delay
works/worked? this is the digital delay unit that michaelbrook opined is
responsible for the sound of most of eno's early records. i saw michael's -
it was a project-looking single rack unit with a few buttons and knobs.
he said the sound decays uniquely and builds up into these characteristic
textures. apparently the technique for shifting delay time was
intereseting, but i don't know what it was. probably not a magnus loop.
i contacted dulay once, to procure one of these units, but they were quite
expensive and i never followed through. he was planning on ceasing
production soon as the chip supply ran out; this was a few years back...
one of the reasons the H3000 sounds so good is that there are analog
processes involved in the pitch shifting algorithms. i talked to an
eventide tech at length about it - what a great machine. a _digital audio_
device that was in production for 13+ years. that's got to be some kind of
record. IMO it still sounds better than any other digital effects box i
have heard.
