Aren't you mixing MIDI with DINsync?
DINsync needs two pins connected for the sync function,
the rest of the pins (start/stop, continue) are optional.
MIDI only uses two wires and telescoped GND, the other pins are NC.
Atari put midi thru on the unused pins of the midi out.
But that was just skimping on a thru connector,
not a 'official' allowed way to do it.
