The primary purpose of a 10X probe is not for working with high voltages,
but rather to work with sensitive circuits. A 1X probe will have an
impedance of only 1 Megohm plus the capacitance of the coaxial cable. A 10X
probe will have 10 Megohm resistance with 1/10 the capacitance.
If all you are using the scope for is to observe signals between modules
then a 1X is fine. But.
Want to look at the integrating capacitor on a VCO? Even the 10X probe will
influence the circuit.
