Many years ago, I had schematics for a set of simple passive RC/diode circuits that produced the numbers 0 to 9 on your scope's display when connected to the X-Y inputs and fed a 60Hz sine wave as input.
A circuit for each numeral.
They looked like nice sinusoidal, hand-written numbers.
If I find them again, I'll share them. Anybody else played with this sort of thing?
In addition to active filters, phasors, reverbs and delays also produce some wild patterns on the scope with the unprocessed input signal fed to one axis and the output of the effect to the other axis.
Another way to project an XY display onto a wall is to point a laser at a small mirror mounted on a speaker, direct the refleted beam to another mirror/speaker positioned so that the final beam hits the center of your projection surface.
Feed the X signal to one speaker and the Y signal to the other.
You may need play around with the positioning of the speakers to get the X-Y axes perpendicular to one another.

can be found. Try passing a lowpass filtered signal in the X, and the same
signal filtered highpass into the Y. Experiment with similar setups.
To get this onto a wall, for example, just use a video camera. Not
elegant, but it works.

I finally got to the toilet paper, but couldn't find the end of the roll.
I grabbed at the paper, clawing at it, but it felt like smoke. I
eventually managed to grab a fistful, and looking down at my hand, I
couldn't see anything, but I knew I had the paper. Somehow. I managed to
wipe, somehow, and while glancing down I noticed my legs had disappeared.
Oh, no, it's ok, there they are. No, they've gone again. How the fuck am I
supposed to wipe when my asshole keeps disappearing?
