More mad science and music...
Back when I worked at Perkin-Elmer, I wrote software that controlled
Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrophotometers. These instruments use
ionized argon plasma at 1000s of degrees C to cause a sample to emit atomic
emission spectra, which is analyzed to determine the parts-per-billion of
trace elements, like arsenic in cheerios, etc. Well, an RF Engineer
co-worker once hooked up two 40Mhz free-running RF generators that he
designed (used to excite the gas plasma) to the left and right channels of a
tube preamp that was connected to a turntable. He lit the two plasmas,
started the turntable, and slowly adjusted the output. Needless to say,
I've never heard "Money" off Dark Side of the Moon ever quite the same way
again! I'm sure I lost some hearing that day.
