Hi Chriss,
I only used these devices because a friend at work suggested that they might
be a suitable substitute - and because we happened to have some in stores.
The reason the FMMT489 works well as a replacement is almost certainly
because of it's low Vce(sat), a desirable characteristic of a power
transistor, which is exactly what the 489 is. The low Vce(sat), exhibited by
the original 2SD1469s, is the characteristic of importance. There will be
many other parts that will do. Try some other power transistors that you can
easily get hold of, since these will have similar characteristics.
The FMMT489 devices are actually surface mount by the way - just a warning
in case you're intending to use thru-hole components throughout.
Please don't go into excessive trouble to get hold of the '489 because they
are one of potentially hundreds of transistors that will work pefectly well
as a substitute. Only I haven't got round to testing other parts yet - I'm
still doing other stuff for the 909, like finishing off the PIC software and
tidying up schematics... I only used the 489's because we had some at work.

Subject: [sdiy] fmmt489
hello list,
i am building a 808/909 clone and 2 month ago trevor page posted a mail
where he substitute the 2SD1496`s transistors in the 909 snare with
fmmt489`s.
know i am in trouble because farnell don´t have them anymore and i can´t
find any other seller in germany. (i don´t want to pay so much postage)
does anyone of you know any place where to get them or have any idea of
substitute the substitute. i am not so smart to find that out by myself.
thanks a lot
chriss
