Indeed - problem: To short shift-register -> To short loop-time.
Each added D-flip-flopp doubles length (you have to select feedback
terms correctly naturally).
The 4006 is a 18-stage shift register with multiple taps
available. Two or three of those (reaching up for 36 or 54 steps) and
a 4070 (quad XOR) correctly wired and you have a wealth of noise. Add
power and a suitably high clock. It naturally needs filtering, but
that is another issue.
Cheers,
Magnus
