[sdiy] Mixer levels

Hi gang,

Okay, here's a question I've always wondered about:
How do mixers work? Specifically, I am curious about
how the levels work. Let's say you have an 8-input
mixer. If you have 8 +/-10V sigs, then it seems you'll
need some attenuation, or else the output will clip.
But if you have only 2 inputs live, you'll need less
attenuation. Is this handled by the output fader?
