[sdiy] MIDI hardware (and software)

Hello All,

(advance apologies for the newbie-ish bent of this message.)

Well, I've finally decided to try out this "MIDI" thing all the
youngsters are so mad about these days. Searching around for an
appropriate adapter (I'm using an iBook running OS X), it looks like the
MOTU Fastlane (http://www.motu.com/english/hardware/fastlane_usb/) is a
good place to start. I'm sure someone out there has an opinion on
these-- care to share?

Am also still fishing around for MIDI software that suits me. KeyKit
(which I heard about while lurking on this very list) is impressive, but
doesn't want to work under OS X (I think this has to do with OMS), and
although I find hints of folks wrangling it into doing such, can't seem
to find a working version. Not that booting into OS 9 is such a trial
or anything, it just seems like a shame . . . Well, so, any opinions on
MIDI software is also much appreciated.

Thanks much for your patience-- don't know where I'd be without this
list.

Thanks,
T.Mc
