You can get some stuff at Radio Shack and other stores called
"Tip Tinner and Cleaner". It comes in a pot about 1.5" across
and 1/4" deep. I use it before and after soldering (and in the
middle of a long session too, sometimes). I really like it.

I think there are probably as many different materials used for tips
as there are types of solder, so advice as to whether to leave the
tip covered in solder, or wiped or whatever probably can't be
generalised.
I'm very happy with my Hakko tips, using 'ordinary' resin core solder.
Never do anything special. Whereas when I had a Micron iron the tips
wore out fast.
