[sdiy] Marginally OT: Boss Pedal question

I am thinking back to a few weeks ago when people were talking about a
magical blue pedal...
I think the Boss CE-2.
I saw a couple today in a local music store, but some were $69, some were
$99 (Canadian...so it's not really that pricey).  The difference between the
two being that the more expensive one was made in japan, the other in
taiwan.
I've noticed that people always point out on ebay if their boss gear is from
japan, and I'm wondering what difference it makes?
I'm guessing it's a quality issue, but is it a quality issue that is worth
the extra $30 to me?  Is the pedal worth that in the first place?
