Did you try Open Office?

It's got a really nice Spreadsheet which will read/write M$ Excel format as well.  But it doesn't include a proper database (like M$ Access).

Also there is Star Office (from Sun) which does contain a database, but I think from v6.0 you now have to pay for it.

Both are based on the same source code.
