You should take a look at the Buchla 300 and 500 systems. These were
integrated computer controlled modular systems using S-100 bus (300) and
PDP-8 systems (500) from the 70's.
The late generation Buchla modules (284, 292C) and others had build in
computer ports and remote computer control. There were also computer
controlled routing matrices in the 200 series form.
I had the 500 series operating manuals, but I sent them to Dan Slater who is
more interested in computer control.
The primary focus of early work was creating large (64 to 128 point) voltage
source arrays for preseting parameters. It was generally felt that control
presets were first in importance since a single patch topology can produce a
wide variety of sounds with different control settings.
A good example is a Mini-Moog which has almost not patch options, but still
gets lots of sounds with just control changes.
