Hi Scott!
The Dark Star is capable of a lot more interesting sounds than
the sound sample that you linked to.
I think of it mainly as a sort of percussive voice module, almost
always using the noise to modulate the sound.
It's true that nothing quite offers the same sort of timbre as this
wacky thang!
I'd go ahead and build your circuit using the chip!
(There is also a similar SN76488, the main difference I think
is that the 88 has an internal amplifier)?
Good luck with it. I have a chip and three Dark Star modules
that I'm in the process right now of converting over to Modcan
panel format. I added a voltage control modification to the
envelope and a separated filter output. I'm looking for more...
They look pretty wicked with these elegant panels and banana
jacks, (of course a Cyclops Blue LED adds some drama)!
LOL! Two I get to keep for my own Mighty Modcan system, and
one is for a customer. I have panels for two more conversions
if anyone is interested in Chaos Modcanian style!
