I hear this repeated a lot, but frankly in all the years of plugging and
patching, I've maybe replaced one 1/8" jack. Maybe I just buy good jacks
and equipment that uses good jacks. The patch cords are the weakest
link, being bent and covered with body oils.

So will someone cite me some studies?

I think a lot of it has to do with the care given the equipment given by
the owner. To some extent, a larger jack is more tolerant of abuse.

As for the rest, it may be the stuff of urban (electrical) legend....
