You are absolutely correct. Actually, spring reverbs are 
designed to delay the input signal while keeping it 
relatively intact (sort of), while the VFD modulator is 
intended to distort (or modulate) the signal with the 
ringing sound produced by the internal wires. It would 
probably be better named a *resonator*, but it's more fun 
to see the purists' reactions to my misuse of the ring 
modulator term. Certainly the end result is a lot different 
sounding than a typical spring reverb!
