[sdiy] Stupid Sheppard Generator Question

I built one of these a few years ago, and the design I used was John
Simonton's. Works great. I did all the logic on one chip! It was an Altera
something-or-other (at a prior job where I used Altera tools). This quote
from John's article (1983) caught my eye just now:
The day will soon be here when we wouldn't even discuss a logic
machine approach to this problem. We would just truck ourselves
down to our local electronics store and pick up a blister packed
Single Chip Data Processor to be programed on our trusty Home
Data System.
Hey John, if you're out there reading this, nice call!
