Perhaps...
Downsides to gas welding:
- large gas bottles, which your house insurance company might ask you to
pay extra, sincel you're now storing very flammable gases. For good
welds, you really need something like acetylene---propane just isn't hot
enough to do a good weld.
- expensive hoses, flashback traps, regulators, rental of gas bottles,
etc.

True, gas welding is better for intricate work. If you don't fancy having
a bottle of acetylene at home, try TIG welding---the advantages of gas
welding for intricate stuff, but uses a plasma arc to generate the heat,
so the only gas you need is argon or CO2 or some other inert mixture.
